Welcome to the 7th edition
of the NEMBC’s, AFL Footy Blog. The AFL match results this week were more predictable
than the previous 5 weeks of competition. After ten days of footy with only a day’s
rest in between, I and many other AFL tragics have been thoroughly saturated
with Aussie rules. The ANZAC weekend provided lots of action, some entertaining
close matches and Geelong rose above the pack while Melbourne was left languishing
at the bottom of the ladder.
Umpires still feature but are becoming more consistent across all the games. A number of interesting play-on,
last minute no free kick decisions in the ANZAC Day match with the Magpies just
pipping the Bombers by 4 points and Carlton literally one second away from
a mark in front of goal and certain victory when the siren went. That was last
week! Now we turn our eyes to this week’s games and a more regular three days of footy
leading into the season proper.
Round 7 commences with
the battle of the two magpies at Marvel Stadium on Friday night –The Collingwood
Football Club and the Port Adelaide Power (aka the Adelaide Magpies). This is going
to be a torrid affair if the Power brings its ‘A’ game to Marvel, otherwise
Collingwood will overrun them. I have a feeling that it will be a close match
but The Magpies will retain a slight edge – The margin call 23 points Collingwood’s
way!
Saturday’s opener from
the MCG sees the Demons take on the Hawks in a do or die let's save the Melbourne Footy
club from going down the toilet in 2019. Yes, it has come to this, a desperate
game of footy for the Demons. The Hawks just got out of jail against Carlton
last week but have the players and momentum on their side. The Hawks will make things
very difficult for Melbourne but I am banking that their last ditch desperation
will give Melbourne a ragged edge and maybe a win.
The Giants at home to
St.Kilda is also a big game, not so much for GWS but to observe how the Saints bounce
back after a bad loss last week. I think the Giants have too much run and carry
for St. Kilda to cope with, so it’s the Giants to win. The Brisbane Lions should
have too much firepower at the Gabba and will beat the lacklustre Sydney Swans,
while the West Coast Eagles in Perth should easily account for the Gold Coast
Suns.
The last game on
Saturday evening from Marvel Stadium will pit the Western Bulldogs against the
Tigers. Well, in my opinion, this game is a toss up and can go either way
depending on each side’s mental and physical attitude during the match. Not easy
to pick a clear cut winner here but I will lean the Tigers way because of their
better form of late.
If you watch or listen
to the NEMBC’s Multicultural AFL Footy show this week, they had a 7 year-old
Auskick player, Lachie Johns as a special guest and when asked by the panel who
was going to win this week he, without hesitation, selected: Collingwood,
Hawthorn, GWS Giants, Brisbane Lions, Richmond, West Coast Eagles, Carlton,
Geelong and Fremantle.
In Sunday’s early game, the Carlton Blues
play host to North Melbourne. This is either going to be a close game or the Blues
will run away from the sluggish Kangaroos outfit. After last week’s loss to
Hawthorn, Carlton will have an edge with Charlie Curnow back in the side and
will win. This match is going to be the NEMBC
- 3ZZZ on-line digital broadcast live game call in Greek from Marvel Stadium with
commentators Iris Filolli and Zisis Pouros starting at 1:10 pm. EST.
Another interesting
game will be played at the MCG on Sunday between the Geelong Cats and Essendon.
Although Essendon will be still smarting from that narrow loss to the
Magpies on ANZAC Day, they will come out of the blocks breathing fire, but once
the Bomber onslaught is absorbed by Geelong’s defence, the result will go the
Cats way.
The Last game of the round
from Adelaide Oval, has the Adelaide Crows take on the Fremantle Dockers. These
two sides are fairly well even and looking at them from an objective view they
are both capable of putting on an entertaining game of poise and power and one
could almost predict a draw. No, it won’t be a draw because the Crows have an
ever-so-slight edge playing at home in front of their supporters and a star
called Eddie Betts!
Well that’s it from me
this week- Don’t forget
to listen to the NEMBC’s Live match broadcast on 3ZZZ Digital between the Blues
and Kangaroos from Marvel Stadium
starting at 1:10 pm EST on Sunday afternoon!
Round 7: I am picking: Collingwood,
Melbourne, GWS Giants, Brisbane, Richmond, West Coast, Carlton, Geelong and
Adelaide (Progressive tip score: 29) Top
tipster form the AGE has 26 and from Foxtel 25.
