week 4 - THE GRAND FINAL

The Brownlow medal count happened last Monday night and it couldn’t have been
won by a more deserving player in Nat Fyfe, captain of the Fremantle Dockers.
Nat blitzed the field towards the end beating some awesome company in the process
such as Rodney Dangerfield and equal third players Lachie Neale and Patrick
Cripps. This was Fyfe’s second Brownlow medal - the first coming in 2015.
Congratulations to him for being a worthy winner and an inspiration to his teammates and supporters alike. His on-field leadership is invaluable to how the Dockers
play. No doubt we will see more and more of this young man in the future and
who knows, a third Brownlow!
I am dispensing with the post mortems this week and heading
straight to the chase. Richmond take on the
GWS Giants on the last Saturday in September, in the AFL Grand Final from
the MCG. Richmond is making their 23rd appearance in a Grand Final (won 11 and
lost 11), while the Giants are playing in their very first one, but that doesn’t
diminish the contest.
It’s going to be a cracker of a game in front of nearly 100,000 screaming
supporters. Let’s hope it’s a dry day and not raining as it may spoil the spectacle.
Many punters think that Richmond has the game in the bag and will just steamroll
over the Giants on their way to kicking a cricket score to win the Flag. Both
sides have the best backlines in the AFL and it will be fascinating to watch
how they go about dismantling their opposition. The GWS Giants are going to
make things extremely difficult for the Tigers.
Richmond have won their finals games with relative ease and appear to be
the team to beat this weekend, but not to be denied the Giants have been tough
in and under the packs and have narrowly beaten the odds to win, with many of
their mid-fielders side-lined through suspension and injury.
Players to watch for Richmond are: Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Daniel Rioli, Bachar Houli, Ivan Soldo, Shane Edwards and Jack Reiwoldt. For the Giants: Lachie Whitfield
(returns from an appendix operation), Toby Greene (back from a week’s
suspension), Heath Shaw, Shane Mumford, Zac Williams and the current Coleman medallist,
prolific goal kicker, Jeremy Cameron.
Despite their limited finals experience and their young age, the Giants
will give this Grand Final a red hot go with aggressive tackling, speed, and
fearless endeavour. It will be tight and no beg-pardons given and I also
suspect that there may be a number of reports. The AFL’s newest all-seeing big
brother video reference the ARC may yet be the centre of another controversy. I
would like to see GWS win the flag, but Richmond has been awesome this finals series
and deserve the victory!
Grand Final Tip: RICHMOND TO WIN BY 18 POINTS & Bachar Houli for
the Norm Smith medal.
However, watch out for this ‘finals’ valuable tip:
Did you know that most of the teams which score the first goal in the Grand
Final lose the game!
