NEMBC Live matchday broadcast this week in MANDARIN: Western Bulldogs v. Collingwood from Marvel Stadium on Sunday 3:10 pm EST on 3ZZZ Digital on-line.

Exactly halfway through the season this week and we are still not clear who will make the top four behind Geelong and Collingwood. Last week, the second of three bye rounds brought very few surprises except for the AFL’s new and stupid crowd behaviour laws and the antics of the stadium’s “behavioural awareness officers”. Thank goodness Gillon took care of that very quickly –Silly idea to curtail the enthusiasm of the fans!
On the footy front, Essendon are definitely on the way up while the Hawks are struggling, Adelaide proved too good for the Tigers and the Western Bulldogs fought out a cracker with Carlton coming back from 37 points down to get ahead, then deja vu the same again coming back from 34 points down in the final 9 minutes of the last quarter, but just failing to get ahead of the Dogs by 3 points.
The Saints repeated their close win from the first round against the Suns but this time by 4 points in Townsville, while Fremantle easily accounted for Port Adelaide and on Sunday in Hobart the GWS Giants put an end to North Melbourne’s mini run of 3 wins on the trot.
Round 14, the last of the byes, with Adelaide, Carlton, the Gold Coast Suns, GWS Giants North Melbourne and Richmond taking a break from this week’s activities.
Another week of Thursday night football, this time comes from Perth, where the West Coast Eagles host the Essendon Football Club. Even after their emphatic win against the Hawks last week, I can’t see Essendon beating the Eagles at home so its West Coast by 15 points.
Friday night and Sydney take on Hawthorn at the SCG. Coming off a bye and their big effort in defeating the Eagles in Sydney two weeks ago, I would say that the Swans look like winners over the lacklustre Hawks. Saturday brings the action back into the MCG where the Melbourne Demons challenge the Fremantle Dockers. Melbourne is coming off a bye while Fremantle at home demolished Port Adelaide last week. Teams coming off a bye more times lose than win, so I will go for Fremantle to just be ahead at the final siren.
St. Kilda take on the Brisbane Lions at Marvel Stadium. St.Kilda does well at Marvel, not forgetting that Brisbane suffered a loss to Carlton before their bye last week. So the Lions will have to put that loss away and consolidate their place in the 8 by beating the injury-depleted Saints. It will be a close and hard tackling game with no side taking a step back. I think the Lions at this stage of the year will do enough to ensure victory.
Port Adelaide at home in Adelaide play host to the Geelong Cats and, although about 600 kms away from their beloved cattery, the result may not change. Port will put up a fight but Geelong will be too strong and come out winners. Unless the bye curse bites them hard and Port plays beyond its skin then we may have an upset, but it’s not going to happen!
Last game of the round comes from Marvel Stadium, with the Bulldogs playing Collingwood on what may be quite a blockbuster of a game. The way the Bulldogs capitulated twice in one game and having 5 goals kicked against them in the final 9 minutes of the match last week, I don’t give them much of a chance – It’s the Magpies by a fair margin.
That’s it from me this week. Catch you next week with more comments and tips!
