The Multicultural AFL Football TV & Radio Show – Round 13

By Fiv Antoniou12/6/2019

I never rest in fact I am on the Sunshine Coast for a bit of R&R or I &I, but never-the –less, bringing you my weekly blog and review. Round 12 was a sensational round of footy, Richmond was decimated by the Cats even after their goalless first quarter, they managed 7 in their second and completely eclipsed the Tigers.

The Blues came back from 37 points down halfway in the second quarter to give interim coach, David Teague, victory by 15 points over the Brisbane Lions. The Kangaroos made it three wins in a row at the expense of the Gold Coast Suns and Adelaide won in the last 5 minutes of the game against the fading Giants.

The Sydney Swans managed to thrash the West Coast Eagles at the SCG and no wonder because its been 20 years since the Eagles tasted victory at that ground. One would assume there is a big hoodoo with the Eagles and Sydney. Queens Birthday Monday Big Freeze game between the Magpies and Demons was a very predictable win to Collingwood by 41 points despite Melbourne having one scoring shot less – bad kicking, bad footy, bad attitude and very embarrassing for the Demons, as they cannot get it right this year!

Round 13 is the second lot of  ‘Bye’ rounds and again features 6 games as all teams earn a week’s rest on rotation over the next 3 weeks. This week: Brisbane Lions, Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney and the West Coast take a holiday!

The competition kicks off on Thursday night with a big stakes game from Adelaide Oval when the Adelaide Crows take on the Richmond Tigers. Both sides will consolidate their season if they win, however, there can only be one winner and judging by the way Geelong dismantled the Tigers last week, Adelaide at home will take the spoils of combat.

Friday night footy looks like a cracker as Essendon confront the Hawks from Marvel Stadium. This game is so close on paper I cannot 100 percent predict a winner as both teams are coming off a bye and are so evenly matched at the moment. Essendon has a lot of injured players and the Hawks are trying to save a patchy season - I would like to say Bombers but on record of bouncing back from byes, I have to go for the Hawks in a physically demanding encounter.

There are 3 matches on Saturday, Gold Coast Suns go head to head with St. Kilda at Riverway Stadium in Townsville. Last time they met in the first round this year, St.Kilda managed to hang on and win by a point at Marvel. This time on a neutral ground it’s anybody’s game, but expect the Saints to prevail in a tough contest.

Fremantle host Port Adelaide in Perth and I think the home side will prove too strong for the Power, so it’s the Dockers for me. The Blues play the Bulldogs at Marvel, these two sides met in round 5 earlier this year with Carlton having a big 54 point win. This time Carlton with a new coach and a new style of play will beat the Bulldogs again coming off a bye.

Sunday’s only game comes from Blundstone Arena in Hobart where the North Melbourne Roos, coming off three wins in a row, meet the GWS Giants who lost dismally to the Crows last week. This time around the Giants will be out to repair the damage by beating North Melbourne and consolidating a top four spot on the AFL Ladder.

That’s it from me and while I am sipping very dry Martinis in Mooloolaba catch you next week back in Melbourne, with more comment and tips.

Round 12, I am picking: Adelaide, Hawthorn, St. Kilda, Fremantle, Carlton and GWS Giants. (Progressive tip score: 67)
